In my work as a diplomat, I have witnessed how strategic alliances, determination, and principled leadership can shape global outcomes. Today, there is being written a remarkable chapter in transatlantic cooperation—where the United Kingdom and the United States have united in a shared mission to bring lasting peace to Ukraine.
A Foundation of Solidarity: The London Summit and the “Coalition of the Willing”
On March 2, 2025, Prime Minister Keir Starmer hosted the London Summit on Ukraine, convening 16 nations, the EU, and NATO—a landmark gathering aimed at drafting a concrete peace plan for Ukraine. The summit produced a bold four‑point plan:
- Sustain military aid to Ukraine while amplifying economic pressure on Russia through concerted sanctions.
- Reinforce that any enduring peace deal must protect Ukraine’s sovereignty and ensure it remains at the negotiating table.
- Deepen Ukraine’s defensive capabilities in the wake of any formal peace agreement.
- Establish a “coalition of the willing”, a group ready and able to guarantee Ukraine’s security afterward.
The coalition—led by the UK and France and comprising 31 countries—signaled readiness to deploy peacekeeping forces should a ceasefire or peace deal be reached. This initiative is a clear demonstration of Europe’s commitment, backed by British leadership, to do more than hold the line—to actively secure Ukraine’s future.
US Engagement: Bilateral and Multilateral Momentum
The UK’s efforts have been complemented by robust US diplomatic engagement. In February 2025, a summit in Riyadh between US and Russian delegates marked the most extensive direct contact since 2022. The two sides agreed to “begin working on a path” to end the war in Ukraine. While Ukraine and Europe were notably absent, this laid the groundwork for more inclusive efforts to follow.
Fast‑forward to August 2025, and transatlantic diplomacy surged forward. Following a momentous meeting in Alaska between Russia’s President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, President Trump hosted Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and several European leaders in Washington, where “good and constructive” talks resulted in new momentum for peace. Among the deliverables:
- A “coalition of the willing” working in concert with the US to deliver robust security guarantees for Ukraine.
- A commitment by Ukraine to purchase US arms worth approximately $90–100 billion, funded with European support.
- Plans for a bilateral meeting between Zelenskyy and Putin, with the potential for a later trilateral summit involving the US—a potential breakthrough.
Further underscoring this shift, President Trump clarified that while “ground troops” are off the table, air support remains an option to back Ukraine’s security framework. And the White House confirmed that Putin has agreed to a bilateral meeting with Zelenskyy, paving the way for a potential trilateral gathering with US participation.
Why UK–US Cooperation Matters
This partnership—melding the UK’s coalition-building and security-commitment initiatives with the US’s strategic diplomacy—reveals a critical synergy:
- The UK’s leadership has galvanized European partners, fortified military support, and laid the institutional groundwork for credible security guarantees.
- The US’s involvement brings the global scale, convening power, and leverage needed to drive meaningful negotiation processes and push interactions with Russia back onto the diplomatic track.
Together, these efforts signal a coordinated and increasingly effective approach to charting a peace pathway—a strategy that harnesses both European solidarity and American engagement.
Looking Forward
We all must remain attentive to the delicate road ahead. Success hinges on:
- Putin’s genuine willingness to move from rhetoric to resolution.
- Continuing Western cohesion to uphold security commitments without compromising Ukraine’s sovereignty.
- Turning the promise of peace talks into tangible outcomes—a ceasefire, meaningful negotiations, and robust enforcement mechanisms.
But today, we stand at a hopeful juncture: one where UK and US cooperation is steering collective momentum—a path that may finally bring Ukraine the stable peace she needs and deserves.
